Summary:
On January 11, 2009 the National Hog Dog & Sausage Council attempted to self-promote their organization in a press release by capitalizing on then-President-Elect Barack Obama’s January 10th visit to a DC landmark, Ben’s Chili Bowl, for a “half-smoke” which they say “reflects his excellent and all-American taste in cuisine.” The Council saw this “historic trip” to a “famous DC Hot Dog restaurant” as a vehicle to get their organization media exposure via a clever, somewhat kitschy, play on words: “While most of America is vying for his palate, American hot dogs and sausages were the ‘weiners’ this weekend in Washington.” The release contains a tongue-in-cheek reference to the First Family’s children in an effort to send readers to their website and more importantly, to their self-produced YouTube video on how to eat a hot dog and “hot dog etiquette.”
